DIY Framed Photoboard

Ever since Sarah at Bobbyrobin posted about her amazing DIY photoboards, I've been quietly harbouring my desire to make my own with all our holiday snaps. I'm talking, even before we'd been to half the places and taken the photos, I was planning on creating my own photoboards. Nuts much?

My photoboard ended up framed behind glass instead of being on canvas, after I got my sticky mits on an old picture frame that my parents didn't want anymore. I used the 'Poladroid' application that Sarah suggested to turn all my photos into polaroid style, and took them down to Harvey Norman to catch their 9 cents per print sale ($7.20 for all my prints? I'll take that thank you!).

I bought 2 sheets of matte board, and after an insane amount of measuring and sticking I got all the photos in place.

A very handy builder man who I also like to call my fiance helped me to cut the frame down a little, sand it, prime it and spray it black.

I finally got around to putting it all together this weekend and wollah!

VERY stoked with my photoboard!

Show & Tell

I don't really like to post too much on my real 'work' life. I think because it seems so far removed from what I normally talk about on here. But I thought I would make an exception this time, as I am quite proud of this particular job.

These images are from the house I worked on for the better part of last year. I contributed in many areas, from designing furniture and cabinetry through to choosing fabrics, sourcing accessories, and placement of the clients $3m dollar art collection! Yikes! The company I worked for, Yael K Designs, designed the entire house, start to finish.

There is such a tiny market for designing homes of this scope and budget in NZ, whereas Perth is a whole other story. I've certainly learned a lot during the time I've worked here, and had my eyes opened to how the other half live, and how to design for them!

Design Portfolio 2003-2008

Seeing as in my last post I mentioned that eventually I will have an online portfolio documenting all the various things that I do, I decided to create a link to my most recent design portfolio, which showcases work from 2003 - 2008.

It's a combination of work I collaborated on during my first two years working in the design industry, as well as some projects completed for my degree.

Have a nosey if you like, just click the 'portfolio' link to the right and it should take you to it!

Marimekko Wallpaper

We had a little treat at work today; a presentation of some wicked Marimekko wallpapers.

My absolute favourite was the 'Ystavat' design which comes in some great colourways including a fantastic mustard yellow and black (but which I couldn't find a picture of).
The design is made up of a series of line drawn figures interlacing to create a wave pattern down the paper. It's so quirky yet fairly simple, now just to find a client adventurous enough to use it... yeah right, that'll be the day!
*UPDATE*
Maria, distributor of Marimekko wallpapers in North America has pointed me in the direction of her website New Wall Inc where you can view ALL of the papers plus more! (see the mustard and black colourway above? mmmmm). Thank you Maria!

Thomas Paul for Duralee

I was lucky enough to snap up some large sample pieces of the super Thomas Paul fabrics, supplied through Duralee Textiles. I love the simple, bold, happy prints and colours, and they have cutesy animals and birds in these two designs - my favourites. I'm going to frame some of them as artworks... Project!

Ooh La La, Yellow!

For a long time I have had a soft spot for the colour yellow. Yes, that's right, the colour that many of my fellow interior designers screw their noses up at, and say, 'Ooh no, oh no yellow just won't work, eww no...' Frankly, I couldn't care less because though, of course, there are always situations where some colours will work better then others, I feel yellow gets a severely bad rap for just being a bit fun, and a bit cheeky. And jeepers, isn't it nice to break 'the rules' sometimes, (whatever those are) and just use yellow cos' it makes you happy!? So over the next wee while, I'm going to share images of 'yellow' in some form or another, used in an interior sense, to show everyone once and for all that to use yellow doesn't mean you have to slather all your walls in screaming sunflower hues. It can be your friend! So firstly, I want to share some images from Hawkes Bay based textile designer Leanne Culy. The fabrics featured here are designs from her range put out last year. These particular simple designs are printed in beautiful caramelly yellows, onto 100%cotton and hemp basecloths, available in drapery and upholstery weight finishes.
Check out all of the fabrics in this collection plus other work and info on NZ stockists, on her site Home Base Collections. Have a look at the stunning styling and photography used throughout her site too, it's super gorgeous and very effective!
